The 21st century belongs to advanced materials and nanomaterials, especially biomaterials and renewable energy including bioenergy. Development of biomaterials especially in the field of medicine has already led to development of bio-organs to replace the damaged/diseased human organs. With the help of 3 D printing technologies many implants are being developed to substitute the human organs. With the end of fossil fuel era renewable energy from wind, solar and biomass has become order of the day. Bioenergy produced from renewable biomass, bio wastes and bio-fuels like bio-ethanol, bio-diesel etc are occupying larger space in the renewable energy segment.

Mechanical engineering is a lead discipline for all developments in the fields of aerospace, defense, manufacturing, marine, oil and natural gas, automobile, transportation &  handling, measurements, instrumentation and control, engineering management and several others. The interdisciplinary need of the day puts forward lots of challenges on research and development, design, analysis, manufacturing and testing arenas in mechanical engineering. Advances in mechatronics and mechanical engineering is taking the world into new frontiers of materials and machines which can replace humans in many fields of production and testing. 

With these in mind, the Departments of Biotechnology & Biochemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, Mohandas College of Engineering and Technology, Trivandrum in collaboration with Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers(IIChE) are jointly organizing preconference workshops and a two day National Conference on the themes – “ Advances in Bioenergy & Biomaterials” and “ Advances in Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics”.

The Department of BT & BCE is organizing a workshop on “DWSIM – Open Source simulation Software” on 19th Dec 2017.  The workshop is focused on introducing the free open source software being promoted by IIT, Mumbai under Ministry of HRD as FOSSEE (Free and Open Source Software for Education) as a open source alternative to commercial simulators such as Aspen Plus, CHEMCAD, PRO/II etc.
